As part of our winter holidays, we visited the Calilegua National Park, which is only a couple of hours drive from Salta. It is a cloud forest reserve, that rises from the low-lying Chaco (400 meters asl) up to (3000 meters asl), where the forests give way to open grasslands. The park boasts over 350 species of birds, including condors in the highest areas. We were accompanied by Tom Salisbury, our latest visitor form the UK (here seen alongside Tomas on the edge a recent landslide caused by heavy rains last summer). One of the park's attractions are its lianas, some of which provide free entertainment (as shown in the second photo!). The vegetation is amazingly diverse and very dense. It is possible to walk for hours along the various footpaths without catching more than a glimpse of the sky above.
